Planning Main Product – Colour Palettes

Many of the products that I have analysed have had two main colours for the main objects and then a third colour for things like a kicker or banner so that they stand out for the reader. On the Billboard front cover it uses a colour scheme of pink for the background, yellow, white and black for the main components and then red for the kicker so it stands out. On this magazine the colour pink symbolises that this is a magazine aimed towards women however it’s not a solid pink so it shows us that this convention is being broken. The black font shows us that this is following the design of other pop magazines. This makes it seem somewhat traditional.

This is the Magazine I based my information off of:

Planning Main Product – Language & Register

The way in which most of the products I have looked at use things such as nicknames to engage properly with their target audience. These magazines also use things like quotes and kickers to grab the reader’s attention, the short burst of engaging information tempts the reader to pick up the magazine and buy it. For my magazine I will adapt it to include things like kickers and engaging language so that appeal to my target audience.
Here is the magazine I am basing this off of:

Planning Main Product - Representation

The different social groups I have represented are: Males, Females, 14 – 20 years old, want a leisure magazine, like pop music and enjoy magazines which have information on music, artists, clothes and events.

I have constructed these representations using san serif fonts, good looking subject, popular clothing on the subject, bright colours and enticing statements. These representations will bring in the target audience for my magazine.

San Serif Fonts – This shows people that the magazine is not a formal magazine and is for reading at leisure.

Good Looking Subject (14-20) – A subject that is between the ages of 14 to 20 and is generally good looking then this will attract people of this age range which is within my target audience. It may also attract those that just like the look of the subject.

Popular Fashion/Style – If the subject is wearing popular clothing then it will attract many people who like this sort of clothing that maybe are looking to find out what it is if they have never seen it before and be pulled in by the other aspects of the magazine.

Bright Colours – Bright Colours will catch the attention of almost any reader this will then allow the other aspects of the magazine to pull the target audience in and leave non-targets to be distracted again.

Enticing Statements – Enticing statements will also catch the attention of many people and could possible convince people who are not sure about buying the magazine to just go and buy it. It may also convince someone out of the target audience to buy the magazine as well.

Planning Main Product – Masthead Fonts (Primary Research)

These are the three possible fonts I wanted to use:

1.

2.
3.

I have chosen these three fonts because I like them and they seem to go very well with the magazine and feeling I am trying to create. Out of the three I decided to choose ‘Progress’ because it goes very well with the image and feeling I am trying to create in my magazine and will appeal best to my target audience because it’s in no way formal and makes you think of piece, happiness and hippies when you look at it.

Planning Main Product - Target Audience

I am doing a questionnaire so that I know what to put into my magazine and how to improve it. For this I will giving the questionnaires (below) to people I think will be part of my target audience. Once I have the questionnaires back I will be able to find out what kind of target audience I should be trying to appeal to.
I will give the questionnaire to 20 people in the age range of 13 - 18 and of both genders to give myself an accurate idea of who my target audience is.
For these questions people answered:
  1. The majority of people said 10-16.
  2. 7 people are male and 13 people are female.
  3. 20 people said that they do enjoy listening to music.
  4. 11 people said that they DO like popular music whereas 7 people said they DIDN'T and 2 people only said they like SOME artists/songs.
  5. The majority said that they listen to music everyday.
  6. The majority said that they would pick up my magazine every two weeks.
  7. 0 people said YES and 20 people said NO
  8. 16 people said YES and 4 people said NO
  9. "I don't like subscribing to magazines."
I have discovered that males around the age 13-20 are my target audience for my magazine.

This questionnaire (below) will be used to find out what I need to change or improve about my magazine. The questionnaires will be given to similar people as the first questionnaire as long as they still fit the target audience.

For these questions people answered:
  1. 17 people said YES and 3 people said NO
  2. Most people said that they would like to make the magazine more aimed towards males.
  3. A lot of people would like to see upcoming artists.
  4. Most people like how fun and upbeat it is.
  5. The majority said they would pay up to £5 for my magazine.
  6. Most people said that they would like to see projects that artists are currently working on.
  7. The greater part of the people asked said modern.
  8. The larger part said yes.
The improvements that I will be making are:
Aimed towards males, very modern and sophisticated.

Planning Main Product - Genre

For my magazine I have picked the 'Pop/Popular' Genre. I have chosen this because it has the largest audience and gets a lot of advertisements from songs being in the top charts. This genre also gets a lot of attention from famous figures such as pop stars. I would also like to add a more male touch to this genre since the audience is predominantly female.
However this magazine will have a lot of competitors considering it has the largest audience, but this will allow for inspiration from other magazines.
