Evaluation Of My Preliminary Tasks/Portfolio

Evaluation of My Foundation Portfolio:

Cover:

My media product is more of a typical cover, having a similar layout to most other magazines (Such as the masthead being at the top of the page) and having content based of off other school magazines that we researched and analysed. This has been done so that people recognise it as a well thought out magazine and since people will be used to this type of layout, it won’t shock anyone. My cover also follows the school’s colour scheme. I used this colour scheme so that people could easily identify which school the magazine was associated with. The photo used for my cover is slightly different to most other magazines of this type. This is because I have put him towards one side, whereas most other magazines have the photo in the centre looking straight ahead.
My cover represents the sixth former's as smart, well dressed and cheerful in the picture. This is to make my target audiences of students and parents think well of the school and the magazine, which may persuade them to buy the magazine. My cover suggests that the audience will think well of my magazine and the school it’s representing.
My magazine should be published in shops and given out freely in Biddulph High School with ads in to pay for the printing and other things. I would do this because the target audience is parents and young adults/students (sixth former's) and giving the magazine out for free in school will mean that the sixth former's all get it and so do their parents.  It could also be published digitally but it would probably not reach the target audience very well using this method.
The audience of my product is students and parents since these are the people who will most likely pick up or receive this magazine.
To get the target audiences attention, I am going to have the magazine handed out for free in the school. However in a shop my magazine will grab the reader’s attention using interesting headlines, bright colours to catch your eye and a small bit of advertising. The picture can also attract the attention of readers. My headlines use exclamation points to portray importance, grabbing the reader’s attention and making them want to read it.
I have learnt how to use blogger and the meaning of PLACES (Props, Location, Actors, Costume, Expressions and Setting).
I feel I have learnt what covers will need for to get the audience’s attention and how to make them look good.

Contents Page:

My contents page is a pretty typical contents page. The layout is very similar to other contents pages that I've seen. However the picture I used for this page was not very similar to the other content pages
I've seen. Because of the way I have made the contents page people will easily recognise it as a contents page making it easy to use. My contents page also follows the colour scheme set up by the cover page.
My target audience is students (mainly pupils of Biddulph High School) and their parents, the information on the contents page links to things from Biddulph High School which is why steered more towards people who are either going there or want to go there. The picture used on the contents page is of a student who attends the sixth form at Biddulph High; other students will see this and maybe be able to relate to the person in the picture.
The audience for this product would be students from Biddulph High looking to go into Sixth form or other students looking to go into sixth form as well as the parents of these students.
To get the attention of my target audience I would have to use my front cover.
I have learnt that the type of photo you use for a page affects the audience that you attract. Such as the class and age of the group the target audience would be. Making this product I have also become better at using Photoshop, being able to get rid of undesirable things on a person’s face (spots) and also just generally being better at Photoshop. I have also become better at editing aspects of my blog.

Preliminary Task - Masthead Fonts

Three different fonts I have to choose from:

For my Cover I chose the first masthead. I chose this masthead because it’s smarter looking than the other two as well as it looking better with the selected colour scheme. This masthead is sans serif so that people don’t feel that the magazine will be ‘boring’ and formal however it still looks somewhat smart enabling it to still have the feeling of an official school magazine.

The reason I have used the one above over the two drafts below is because it has a colour scheme which links in a lot more to the school I am trying to portray. It also has an extremely simple layout.

Preliminary Task – Layout

The three different layouts I was choosing from:

My final layout will be the first one. I have chosen this as my final layout because I feel it is very simple which makes it very easy to read and take in the information presented. This layout will also appeal to the target audience because it allows you to see the full medium shot of Callum (The Subject) with nothing overlapping. I want it this way because I am using Callum (The subject) as a representative of the school’s students which will attract the correct target audience.

Preliminary Tasks - Colour Scheme

I have used a blue and black which are very similar to that of the sixth form tie and the school colours. Orange is also part of my colour scheme due to the background of the picture being also most completely orange. This makes the others colours stand out because of the contrast. The black and blue on my main preliminary task has been used because the sixth form tie is blue and black, the container in the background also has a blue on it and so I made part of the masthead merge into to this. This makes the magazine look well organised. This makes the readers make an an association between the magazine and the school in a much better way than just saying you're associated.

Preliminary Task - Target Audience

My target audience for my school based magazine is parents and their children (that are attending the school). The reason I have chosen this group is because parents will want to know about the school their children are attending and what progress the school is making, this progress of the school will be portrayed through the magazine and what is going to be written in the magazine about the school. The content in the school magazine will be based around this target audience and will be very formal.
